Whitecourt Wolverines claw Olds Grizzlys in 5-2 loss

Three unanswered Whitecourt goals starting midway in the third period did the damage

OLDS — The Olds Grizzlys suffered a setback when they lost 5-2 to the visiting Whitecourt Wolverines Nov. 5 at the Sportsplex.

The loss kept the Grizzlys in last place in the six-team AJHL South division with a 7-9-0-0 record, giving them 14 points in 16 games.

They remained just one point back of the Drayton Valley Thunder.

The Grizzlys got off to an optimistic start Tuesday night.

At the 5:48 mark of the first period, forward Junshi Hideshima, assisted by Mitch Patrick, scored his sixth goal of the season, giving the Grizzlys a one-goal lead.

However, the Wolverines tied the score just before the end of the period, at the 19:13 mark.

The wolverines took the lead with the only goal of the second frame at 3:47.

The Grizzlys knotted the score at 2-2 just 1:30 into the third period on Jonathan Doucette’s fourth goal of the season, assisted by Antonio Bevacqua.

But that was it for Grizzlys offence.

From then on, the Wolverines scored three unanswered goals, including an empty-netter, for the final 5-2 result.

Ben Dardis took the loss for the Grizzlys, stopping 31 of 34 shots on goal. The Grizzlys sent 30 shots at Whitecourt goalie Zac Onyskiw.

The Grizzlys were zero for one on the powerplay. The Wolverines were one for two with the man advantage.
