NORWAY HOUSE, Man. — Police say a nine-year-old girl has died after being hit by a vehicle in northern Manitoba.

RCMP say the girl was with another child on Friday when they crossed a road in the community of Norway House and the girl was hit by an SUV.

Police say a woman who was driving the SUV stopped and asked the other child to go get help.

They say the driver then fled but later came back and turned herself into police.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 28-year-old woman is to appear in court May 4 on a charge of failing to stop after an accident.

Police say alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors in the collision and officers continue to investigate.
