SUNDRE - The following is a message from Sundre Rec Hockey's vice-president:
In my time on the Sundre Rec Hockey board, we've worked hard to change the perception that people have of the difference between rec hockey and minor hockey.
For many years, rec hockey was viewed as the inferior program, but I think that has started to change. Rec hockey is simply different.
Every family is different, and for some, minor is what meets their needs. I'm so glad that's available to them! For other families, they're looking for a different type of hockey, and we can meet that need.
We strive to provide an affordable, low-commitment program that still offers great opportunities for kids.
We have five teams with kids aged 4-18. Although we have guidelines for the age for each team, it varies a little each year, depending on how many kids we have registered in each age range.
We start the season with a number of power skating sessions, something we've been able to provide thanks to our bacon fundraiser. For many years, we didn't do any fundraising, but we wanted to make sure we could keep fees low. Thanks to our bacon fundraiser, we've rarely had to raise registration fees and have been able to provide power skating and other perks for players.
Each team generally has one to two home ice times each weekend, with away games rounding out their schedule. For families looking for less of a time commitment, this meets the need.
I'm thankful that we can offer a program that helps all kids have the opportunity to play hockey, regardless of their families needs.
Heidi Werdal,
Vice President
