Area fire departments' rural calls tallied

Five departments report structure fires, medical assists, motor vehicle collisions among calls

MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY – County council has received a report on the rural activities of fire departments in the district for the second quarter of 2020.

The update came as part of the legislative, community and agricultural services department quarterly report presented during the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

“Right now our service levels are status quo,” said Chris Atchison, director of legislative, community and agricultural services.

More people were staying indoors during the COVID pandemic loackdown which meant few outdoor incidents to respond to, he said.

“Lots of people at home means less motor vehicle incidents,” he said.

Between April 1 and June 30 Didsbury Fire Department responded to 20 outside fire calls, five motor vehicle collisions, eight EMS assists, 11 structure fires, 16 alarms, and a total of 25 calls in rural areas and 64 calls overall.

Carstairs Fire Department responded to 11 grass fires, 20 medical assists, 10 first response medical, eight mutual aid calls, seven motor vehicle collisions, seven structures fires, three vehicle fires, and a total of 78 calls.

The Cremona fire department responded to 10 medical calls, four fires, one mutual aid call, six motor vehicle collisions, five alarm bells, one controlled burn, two public hazard calls and a total of 30 calls.

Seventy-three per cent of all the Cremona department calls were in Mountain View County and 23 per cent in the village of Cremona.

Olds Fire Department responded to 42 rural calls, including eight fires, eight motor vehicles collisions, six mutual aid calls, and five alarms.

Sundre Fire Department responded to 45 rural calls, including 41 in Mountain View County. The report did not include specific numbers of calls for the Sundre department.

Council accepted the report as information.
