MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - County council has approved a number of changes to the municipality’s Municipal Elections Bylaw 25/20.

The move came during an early December council meeting and was made in preparation for the October 18, 2021 municipal election.

In preparing for the election, county administration reviewed existing municipal legislation and made a number of recommended changes to the county’s bylaw.

The approved changes include allowing the returning officer to designate more than one voting station per voting subdivision, appointing a returning officer and substitute returning officer, permitting voting stations to open prior to 10 a.m., and requiring that every nomination be filed with an alternative deposit amount up to $1,000.

Council gave first and second reading to the bylaw amendments on Dec. 2.

Also during the meeting, administration gave councillors an update on identification needed by voters during the election. That identification will need to show both the elector's name and physical address.

The county will be undertaking an information campaign prior to the election to inform residents of the identification requirements, said Chris Atchison, director of operations.
