MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Alberta seniors can camp at a discounted rate this year at just over 140 Alberta Parks campgrounds including some just west of Cremona or south of Sundre depending on travel route.
Starting May 1, eligible Alberta seniors aged 65 and older can get a 25 per cent discount on camping fees at 142 select provincial campgrounds.
Several of the campgrounds are easily accessible from Mountain View County.
Fallen Timber South Campground is 59 kilometres west of Cremona on Highway 40 and Burnt Timber is a few miles north up the road from Fallen Timber South.
Red Rock Sawmills Ltd. operates both.
Along with encouraging seniors to visit places they’ve never been, provincial officials say focusing on these particular places also helps balance visitation and use across the province, so that parks are maintained for current and future generations.
To receive the discount, eligible seniors must be the camping permit holder, have valid identification and be part of the camping party for the entire stay.
“I’m pleased to see our government continue to follow through on our promise to introduce a seniors discount. This will make it easier for seniors to enjoy Alberta’s beautiful landscapes,” said Jason Nixon, minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services in a press release issued Friday.
There are 55 sites at Fallen Timber South Campground that is open April 29 to Oct. 14 weather dependent. Seniors discount applies for any camping nights reserved for May 1 and onward. There is a hand water pump, pit/vault toilets, fire pits and free firewood available.
