MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Citing warm, dry weather and windy conditions, Mountain View County has imposed a fire restriction effective immediately, officials said Monday.
“I reached out to all our fire chiefs earlier in the day (Monday) to confirm that they want the restriction,” Chris Atchison, director of legislative services, told the Albertan.
Under Section 8.02 of the county’s fire bylaw, all current fire and firework permits are cancelled and no new fire or firework permits will be issued pending the lifting of the fire restriction.
Activities still permitted under the fire restriction include cooking with a barbecue, burning only burnable debris in acceptable burning barrels, fires that are fuelled by compressed air (such as propane torches and oxygen/acetylene torches), and recreational fires.
According to the bylaw, recreational fires are “lit and maintained for the primary purpose of cooking, warmth or social interaction, otherwise known as a campfire or bonfire and not contained in an acceptable fire pit or acceptable burning barrel.”
Fires in acceptable fire pits or acceptable fireplaces are permitted with conditions, including that the flame height does not exceed one meter above the structure or container, and only clean fuel is used such as natural gas, dry wood or charcoal in amounts which will be contained within the fire pit or fireplace below the mesh screen.
