MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - Bird watching enthusiasts, including those hoping to photograph owls in Mountain View County, are being asked to be respectful during their exploration efforts, particularly around Winchell Lake on the south boundary of the municipality.
“There have also been concerns forwarded by local residents to the county about trespassing on private property,” chief administrative officer Jeff Holmes told the Albertan.
“There has been some social media promotion of Water Valley as a destination to view owls. To address traffic issues on Range Road 52, the county posted on digital sign boards confirming no parking is allowed along the range road.”
The county has put out a notice asking birders to be sure to respect private property rights when exploring in the municipality, including around Winchell Lake.
“We warmly welcome you to the scenic wonders of Mountain View County, where nature unfolds its beauty in every corner,” the notice reads.
“It has come to our attention that the Winchell Lake area has become a popular spot for owl photography, attracting many bird enthusiasts. While we are delighted to share the natural charm of our region, we kindly ask your cooperation in preserving the sanctity of private properties.
“We understand the allure of capturing moments with the majestic owls in the area, and we want to guide you towards a positive and considerate experience.”
Visitors to the Winchell Lake area are being asked to park their vehicles in appropriate locations.
“By parking directly at the lake and walking in, you not only ensure your safety but also demonstrate respect for the local community and their private spaces.”
Visitor are also being asked to ensure they are using public lands, or if on private lands, that they receive permission from the landowner to be on the property.
“It is essential to exercise caution and ensure that the lands you are accessing are indeed public property or that you have obtained permission from landowners.”
As well as Winchell Lake, there are six other recreational areas in the county where visitors may want to visit: “Westward Ho Campground, Water Valley Campground, and day use areas at Bagnall, Hillers Dam, and Davidson at Bergen
