MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - County council has instructed administration to conduct an internal review of council compensation against comparable municipalities and provide a report back to council for consideration in preparation for the 2025-29 council term.
The move came by way of motion at the Sept. 4 council meeting.
County Remuneration and Compensation Policy #1004 requires that rates and benefits be reviewed every four years, which has historically been conducted in preparation for an upcoming council term to ensure that new members receive appropriate remuneration which is competitive and comparable to other similar municipalities.
In 2021, administration also conducted an internal review of council compensation, including benefit packages.
“It is administration's position that the internal review process is the most cost effective and appropriate manner to conduct the review, leading to a qualitative analysis on council compensation rates that can be considered,” Christopher Atchison, the county's director of Legislative, Community and Agricultural Services said.
Atchison told council that accessing compensation information from other municipalities is usually straightforward, and that Mountain View County routinely provides other municipalities with information for their compensation reviews.
Administration will now review comparable municipalities and return recommendations back to council for consideration.
“I think the reviews are important to do,” said reeve Angela Aalbers. “It gives our public an idea of where we are within our peer groups.”
