MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY – The Water Valley Stampede rodeo celebrated its 70th year with a large public turnout and great competition.

The Foothills Cowboy Association sanctioned event was held June 8 and 9.

Winners included Austin Simpson and Sawyer Hutchinson in novice horse riding, each scoring 66 points, Colts Richards in junior steer riding with a score of 69, and Austin Kroeker in junior bull riding with 64 points.

As well, Holten Harms won in tie-down roping in a time of 12.1 seconds, Greg Mulhall in steer wrestling clocking 6.1 seconds, Brady Van Gelderen and Kevin Perrott in team roping with an even 14.0 seconds, Danika Scott in junior barrel racing with 16.5 seconds, and Veronica Archer in pee wee barrels with a time of 18.62 seconds.

Other winners included the Alexander Bray Team in wild horse racing, Team Ramrod in wild pony race, Piper Custead in cow riding, Tyler Ritchie in ranch bronc riding, and Callum Currie and Mason Welsh in wild cow milking.

Mountain View County Division 2 Coun. Greg Harris called the rodeo weekend a great success.

“It was the best attendance they’ve had since pre-COVID, even with the blustery weather,” said Harris, whose division includes Water Valley.

There were several dignitary appearances in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the rodeo, he said.

“The county was loudly mentioned and thanked for their participation and help over the years,” he said.

Many of those in attendance were tourists visiting to the district to see a rodeo, he said.
