Steven Matz pitches into sixth inning, Jays and Tigers settle for 3-3 tie

DUNEDIN, Fla. — Steven Matz made his fourth Grapefruit League start for the Toronto Blue Jays, pitching 5 1/3 innings in a 3-3, 10-inning tie against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday.

Matz allowed two runs on six hits and two walks in his first start against a team other than the Philadelphia Phillies before three relief pitchers came in to finish the game.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., had an RBI double and scored on a single by Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

The Jays led 3-2 heading into the ninth, but David Phelps gave up a solo home run to Eric Hae, his third of spring training.

Casey Mize had his best outing in his fourth start and fifth appearance for Detroit, striking out nine in four innings. 

Tigers pitchers combined to fan 17 Toronto batters, with Marcus Semien striking out three times in four at-bats.

The Blue Jays will face the Yankees in their season opener on April 1 in New York.
