May 21, 1939 – April 16, 2023
With great sadness, we announce that Alexander (Alex) Bartholomew passed away peacefully on the morning of April 16th, 2023 in Bearberry Alberta, with the love of his family around him. After a short battle with Cancer, Alec finally succumbed to his illness.
Alex was born May 21st, 1939, in Toronto, Ontario and is the son of Leona and Alexander Bartholomew. Alex grew up with his two brothers Leonard and David Bartholomew. The family intensely loved camping, fishing and boating. Much of Alex's childhood was filled with great outdoor activity and formed what would be a huge part of both his personal and work life.
Alex studied Forestry at the University of New Brunswick and completed his Masters at the University of Toronto. He then moved to Thunder Bay after accepting a teaching job at Lakehead University. Ontario, working with Great Lakes Forest Products, where he significantly impacted the field of forestry and Thunder Bay's pulp and paper industry. He then left Great Lakes Forest products to work with amazing like-minded individuals in a start-up company called Paper Mill Rewinding.
In 1968 while in Thunder Bay, Alex Married Dianna O’leary, and they had a son, Christopher Bartholomew. Alex cherished sharing his love of the outdoors with his son through many fishing, camping, and skiing adventures. He was a devoted father who imparted the value of an active lifestyle and finding a daily purpose to all close to him.
Alex's entrepreneurial spirit in 2004 brought him West to Lethbridge, Alberta. He met Nila Stringer, and they had 17 happy years together sharing their love of the outdoors and traveling. The enjoyed adventures in Thailand, Ghana, Australia, the Maritimes, and a beautiful Viking River Cruise along the Rhine.
West of Sundre, Alex found his paradise. He loved tending to the ranch, riding through the Foothills on his horses, fishing the rivers of the Rockies, golfing at Coyote Creek Golf Course, photographing wildflowers and wild horses, and taking long walks with his beloved dogs.
Alex cherished his grandchildren Colton, Alyssa, and Quinn. He couldn't have been prouder of them. He was an avid follower of their activities and accomplishments, and he couldn’t have been prouder of everything they did, small or large.
Alex will be dearly missed by all his family and friends including Nila’s daughters Kait and Jade, his son Chris, and Daughter in Law Kelly.
