Husband, Dad, Father-in-law, Grandpa, Great Grandpa, Son, Brother, Uncle, and Friend. Tom was born in Holden, Alberta, Jan 8, 1933 to James and Florence Courtney.
With his parents and sisters (Hazel, Ethel), they lived on various farms in the Holden, Alberta and Ponoka, Alberta areas. Growing up in good times and hard times is where Tom developed his character. Hardworking, smart, loving and generous were just some of the words used to describe Tom. Tom worked as an oil driller in Cardston, AB when he met an amazing nurse named Carrie Reimer. Courtship led them to joining their lives in marriage on Dec 30, 1952. Mom and Dad worked hard at various things to support their family of five. Collectively they worked in healthcare, in the oil patch, as dairy farmers, welding and in business as the owners of Courtney Berg Industries. They worked as a team with respect and love for each other. Tom’s most fulfilling roles were as Husband, Dad and Grandpa. His wife Carrie was his partner in life. They worked hard together and in retirement were able to travel, spend time with family and friends and winter in the California sunshine. Together they made a happy home in Ferintosh, Linden, Innisfail and Olds. Tom was a loving Dad and proud of each of his children and loved their spouses as his own children. Each grandchild knew without a doubt how much he was interested in their lives and how much he loved them. He left us quickly and peacefully July 14, 2023 in Red Deer, AB at the age of 90.
Tom will be missed greatly by his children Cathy and Neal Westlund, Lynn and Murray Regehr, Cindy and Marvin Hoyme and Jim and Sandy Courtney and his 14 grandchildren and their families. He was predeceased by his wife Carrie Courtney, infant son Tommy, son Derrick, and great grandson Brady Regehr.
A Memorial Service was held at the Olds Legion Hall on Saturday, July 21, 2023. Tom was laid to rest at the Forest Home Cemetery, Ponoka, Alberta.
