IN LOVING MEMORY

 1933 - 2024

It is with sadness and deep love that we mourn the passing of Birgit Due of Didsbury, Alberta on May 3rd, 2024, at the age of 90 years.

Birgit passed away peacefully at Didsbury Health Centre, surrounded by her family, Mary Ann (daughter) and Kevin Kurtz (son-in-law), Evan Due (son), Kirsten Boyer (granddaughter), and Nickolas Kurtz (grandson).

Birgit was born in Denmark and moved to Canada in 1953 with her loving husband, Henning Walter Due (deceased), where they started in the meat business in Turner Valley. In 1970 they moved to Didsbury where they established Didsbury Meat Processing.

Birgit was very active in the community as a member in the Order of the Eastern Star, St. Hilda Chapter #27, as a member of the Knox United Church, and volunteering with the Knox United Thrift Store. And she was always present cheering her children and grandchildren in local sporting events.

Birgit cherished her many close friends throughout her life. She loved contributing to social functions, from making food to arranging flowers which was her passion. She also loved to play cards and board games. She met new friends through line, dancing which kept her active until her health would not permit any more.

Birgit especially held dear her relationship with family. Having family around her was everything, and she always remembered dates and important events for family gatherings.

In her later years, Birgit battled severe health issues, particularly chronic rheumatoid arthritis which crippled her joints and immune system. Despite this, Birgit remained strong and determined to bring joy to others, to inspire us with her resilience, and to share her love with everyone. Even during times of immobility, Birgit was happy talking on the phone with friends, and was always happy for visits (for which she made sure her hair was done nicely and she was looking good). The greatest joy during her final years was her great grandchildren, Korben and McKinley Boyer; they brought her immense happiness and kept her strong.

Birgit’s life of compassion was amplified through her love of God and service to others.  Throughout her life, Brigit maintained long standing friendships with many, from Denmark to Turner Valley and Didsbury areas.

She will be forever missed and loved by Evan Due and his children, Nikita and Christian, Mary Ann and Kevin Kurtz, Kirsten (daughter) and Dylon Boyer (son-in-law) and their children Korben and McKinley, and Nickolas Kurtz.  To her immediate family in Aalborg, Denmark, she will be remembered by Grethe (sister) and Brono Winther, Michael and Pernille Winther and family, and Charlotte Winther.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

The family would like to thank all those who visited with mom while in the hospital and the many phone calls and well wishes.

We would like to thank Dr. Osakuade and all the staff on Unit 2, Didsbury hospital for your compassion and kindness to our mother.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Knox United Church, 1406-19th Avenue, Didsbury, Alberta, T0M 0W0.
