February 10, 1933 - September 11, 2022
We are saddened to share that Kathleen (Kay) Fischer passed on September 11 at the age of eighty-nine years.
Born on February 10, 1933 in Olds Alberta to Charles and Margaret Thomas, Kay was the second of their four children. Her compassionate and caring nature led her to complete her training as a certified nursing aide in Red Deer and after graduating, she worked in the Olds hospital until her marriage to Clair Fischer. Clair and Kay met at a dance at Melvin Hall and they were married on March 21, 1953. They took over the family farm and resided there until retiring to town. Kay loved farm life and was involved in all aspects of the operation. She especially enjoyed calving time and often took the night shift checking on the cows. She raised chickens, milked cows, fed the pigs and looked after a large garden; but her favourite job was running the combine.
Kay and Clair worked side by side all their lives, and she was devastated when Clair passed in February. Kay was an outgoing person who was very involved in her community. She was a member of Knox United Church where she volunteered many hours and loved singing in the choir. When her children were young, she became a leader of the Wolf Cubs and she and Clair were leaders of a church young people’s group. For many years, Kay served on the Olds Appeal Board for social services. She hosted large family gatherings and many nieces and nephews spent time during the summer months with Kay and Clair on the farm.
When not busy with farming, Kay and Clair loved dancing, singing and traveling with their truck and camper and later, their motor home. They were able to travel across Canada and especially enjoyed their trips to the Yukon. As a semi-retired couple, they traveled to New Zealand and then to the UK for their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Kay loved meeting people and she made some life-long friends through her trips. She was a generous and kind lady who cared deeply for her family and friends.
Kay was a devoted wife to Clair for nearly sixty-nine years. She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Pam (Vair) Whitlow; her son, Glen (Brenda); her daughter, Denise; and her son, Paul (Brenda). Also mourning her loss are her grandchildren Adrian, Lisa (John), Laura Lee (Marlin), Drew, Robyn, Josh (Chelsea), Andre, Marie, Nicki (Codi), and Ryan. She leaves behind her great-grandchildren Jesse, Alexandra, Randilee, Harley, Willis, Quinn, Cheyenne, Ayva, Parker and Talon. Kay is survived by her brother Eric and her sister Betty as well as her many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Clair, her parents, her brother Bob and her granddaughter, Donita Whitlow.
As a family, we send our heartfelt thanks to the staff at Aspen Ridge Lodge for the loving care they have given to Kay throughout her time as a resident. Also, thank you to the staff at the Didsbury Hospital for their expert care during her final days. In keeping with Kay’s wishes, there will be no funeral. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Aspen Ridge Lodge or the charity of one’s choice.
