1931 – 2023
Mr. Douglas Walter ‘Doug’ Gibson of Olds, Alberta passed away at the Olds Hospital and Care Centre, Olds, Alberta on Friday, July 28, 2023 at the age of 92 years.
Doug was born on February 10, 1931 to Walter and Jean Gibson at Crossfield, Alberta. In May of 1941, the family moved to a farm north of Innisfail, Alberta in the Westholm district. Doug attended the Westholm School and later attended school in Innisfail.
In 1955, he graduated from the Olds College. He had a number of jobs before settling on the farm and working with his dad.
Doug was community minded and belonged to several organizations, including the Orange Lodge and the Innisfail Historical Society. He was a long-time member of the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, and also worked many hours at Camp Kannawin, the Presbyterian Church camp at Sylvan Lake, Alberta.
On October 3, 1970, Doug and Joyce were united in marriage. They lived on the farm, and Joyce continued teaching in Innisfail until 1985.
In 2012, they sold the farm and retired to Innisfail, enjoying life in their Beverly Park Condo, and in April of 2022, they moved to a senior’s residence in Olds, Alberta.
Doug was a kind-hearted, easy going, humble man. Though a quiet personality, he had quite the sense of humour. He enjoyed travelling, liked to dance, and loved farming.
Doug will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Joyce Gibson, his brother, David Gibson, his sisters, Kay Woodrow and Mary Duncan, and his sister-in-law, Lynda McFarlane. He will also be deeply missed by numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 4716 - 50 Avenue, Innisfail, Alberta on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. with The Reverend Charlie McNeil Officiating. A Columbarium Interment will be held at the Innisfail Cemetery, Innisfail, Alberta.
