1924 – 2024

It is with sadness that we announce our intelligent, generous and resilient mother, Ester Boesen Hindbo (nee Jacobsen), died on March 25, 2024 at the ripe old age of 99. She was the last of her generation of the Hindbo clan.

Mom was born in Smidstrup, Denmark on September 17, 1924. She immigrated to Canada in 1929, arriving by boat at Halifax’s Pier 21 and travelling across Canada by train to the community of Edgewater, British Columbia, where her family started farming. When Mom was a teen, they moved to a farm near Tilley, Alberta. As the second oldest of twelve children, Mom had a lot of responsibilities, including caring for her younger siblings.

In 1949, Mom married Carl Henry Hindbo and settled in the Dickson area. When Henry died in 1957, Mom had a farm to run and a seven-year-old, two-year-old and an infant to care for on her own. (Her son Brian predeceased Henry.) She was eternally grateful for the support she received from her sister Inger, her Hindbo in-laws, and Pastor and Mrs. Hansen. She became active in the Bethany Lutheran Church, teaching confirmation classes and directing the adult and children’s choirs. She had a beautiful voice.

Mom became a strong, independent woman who was ahead of her time. At the age of forty-five, she moved to Calgary to attend university. She obtained a Bachelors of English and Masters of Social Work, after which she worked in preventative social services in Olds, Alberta. Mom wanted you all to know that she has now gone back to university, this time in a teaching position with the University of Calgary’s School of Medicine (the Body Donation Program).

Mom loved to travel overseas, read, watch Jeopardy, play Scrabble and bridge, and drive her Volvo on many road trips to British Columbia. She treasured all that is beautiful, including nature, art, music and her loved ones (both human and feline).

Mom was predeceased by her son Brian (1954), husband Henry (1957), son Jack (2006), daughter-in-law Beverley (2008) and her siblings Gerda, Inger, Gerard, Linda, and Eunice. She is survived by her daughter Vivian Hindbo, son Grant (CynDee Walden) Hindbo, granddaughter Kris Kjorsvik, great granddaughter Sydney Braun, granddaughter Heather Osecki and her family, grandson Bradley Rogan and his family, siblings Frank (Jennifer) Jacobsen, Julie Calderwood, Eva (Jim) Manly, and Ray (Lise DesRosiers) Jacobsen , god-daughters Heather Manly and Rachel Iwaasa, daughters “in spirit” Donna Kjorsvik and Sharon Holbrook, the Hergenhein family, special friends Carol Shaw, Bob Iwaasa, Diane Prodor and Dorothy Klovan, and too many nieces and nephews to name.

A Memorial Service will be held at the King of Kings Lutheran Church on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Mom’s memory to either The Danish Canadian National Museum Society or UNICEF Canada, her two favorite charities. Mom was a participant in a film project that brings together youth and older adults in creative collaboration to foster intergenerational relationships and combat ageism.
