1942 – 2024
Dennis Lyle Horne, father, husband, and friend, passed away peacefully after a hard-fought battle with cancer on February 26, 2024 at the age of eighty-one surrounded by his family, his boys; his people.
Born in Calgary, Alberta on December 13, 1942, Denny led a life filled with drive, strength, motivation and a love for the land, animals and all that he knew. He was dedicated to excellence, being a farmer and a man of his word. He was committed to those around him and most importantly his passion for farming, cattle, his feedlot and his ability to make something out of nothing. Denny was also known to be a trustworthy man with his strength in his handshake and producing quality product from his farm.
Dennis wouldn’t have been as successful as he was, without the unwavering support of his wife George and kids. He loved his land, his house and his friends. He didn’t giggle often but when he did it was memorable and certainly sincere. Denny was a hard ass but also known for his kindness to the fellas in the community. He was an example of a man that “paid it forward” and a testament of the honor, love and kinship of the community of Mayton.
Dennis was always known for his work ethic and getting things done. He always was among the first to get his crop in and the first to get it off. He was willing to give a helping hand to community members and has shown generosity in sharing his skill sets with the young up and comers that have followed him. As a farmer and a cattleman, he touched the lives of many and left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In his free time, Denny found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed visiting at the kitchen table with close friends, was an avid rodeo fan, and also followed the sports of the young kids in the community.
Above all, Dennis was a proud man, proud of his family, his farm, and his friends. He leaves behind his loving wife Georgetta Horne, his children Sandra Price (Ken Price) and Lorrie Horne (Jen Rogers) and his grandchildren Larissa Price, Ava Rogers and Kate Rogers and his brother, Laverne (Dorothy) Horne and family. Dennis was predeceased by his son, Larry Horne, sisters Twila & Roselynn, and mother and father, Vera and Bill Horne, sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Ron Dalgetty.
Though he may be gone, the memories that Denny created and the passion he shared, will live on in the hearts of all who knew him well.
A private burial will be held, followed by a celebration of Denny's life in the coming months when the grass is green and the sun is shining.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Olds Hospital Palliative Care Ward or the charity of choice, in honor of Dennis Horne’s memory.
“Denny was a hard-ass farmer, whose hands were calloused, but heart was pure. In fields of toil, under the sun's fierce gaze, he found his solace, his pride, and his legacy."
