June 24, 1941 - August 5, 2023
It is with heavy hearts the family of David Karpyshyn announces his peaceful passing after a lengthy battle with health, August 5, 2023, at the age of 82 years.
He was born at Willingdon, Alberta on June 24, 1941, to John and Jean Karpyshyn. He spent his early years on the farm in Vilna. He met the love of his life, Elsie Wolokoff and they married February 4, 1961. They moved around Saskatchewan and Alberta until settling down in Olds in 1963.
Along the way they had three children Kevin, Bonita, and Allan. David’s first job was with Fluor Construction before moving to Canadian Superior at Harmattan Gas Plant. Canadian Superior was eventually bought by Mobil Oil and David retired after 35 years in 1996. He took a break then went back to work at Walmart for 10 years, retiring for the second time 2018.
David combined his three passions whenever he could…camping, playing ball and fishing. In the winter months you could find him at the curling rink. Early on he played fastball for the Olds Chiefs and later slow pitch with the Clippers. He also gave back to the community through involvement with Minor Hockey, Minor Ball and coaching. David and Elsie were billets for the Olds Grizzlies for many years. He also was part of Citizens on Patrol, a member of the Legion, a life member of the Olds Evergreen Club and a volunteer for the Olds Fire Department which he took great pride in. He was awarded with The Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal for 30 years of service with them in 2014.
David is survived by his wife of 62 years Elsie; children Kevin (Dorothy), Bonita (Jim) and Allan (Gail); six grandchildren Tyler (Larissa), Ashlynn (Matthew), Stepanie (Adam), Matthew, Joseph, and Jack; two great grandchildren Josephine and Carson.
The family would like to thank the home care team, Dr. Hoeve, and the staff at the Olds Hospital for their kindness and compassion caring for David the past few years.
A Celebration of life will be held on August 24, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #105, Olds. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Olds & District Evergreen Centre, Olds Hospital or Charity of choice.
