1950 – 2022

It is with great sadness, that we say goodbye to our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

Margrit was born in Switzerland on April 24th, 1950, to Otto and Margrit Buehrer. She was the older sister to Brigitta Buehrer. Margrit grew up in the small town of Buesingen, on the Rhine River, Germany. After graduating from school, she studied Office Administration and was employed in several businesses in Switzerland and Germany. She was married to Alfred Leu of Switzerland in her early twenties, and they welcomed their daughter, Bettina, in 1975. In 1976, they took over the family farm in Neuhausen, Switzerland, where Margrit took on the role of farm wife. She was keen to help in the fields, care for the animals, putting in a large garden every year, cooking, baking, and raising their daughter. Even with her busy life, she always made time for family and friends and enjoyed spreading her hospitality. Margrit loved life in the country, and she raised sheep, pigs, ducks and horses. She always beautified her yard with planting flowers, which she grew herself.

In 1987, the family emigrated to Canada, where she helped build their new home in Red Deer County, Alberta. She operated the combine in fall and looked after the cow calf herd that they were building up. Margrit had a passion for cooking, baking and hand crafting. There was always a freshly baked cake if someone came for a visit.

In 2000, Margrit divorced from Alfred. She never re-married and lived on the farm by herself. She was a foster mom to several children and also worked in food processing, until her retirement. In 2002, she was delighted to become Oma, to the first of four grandsons. She was happiest being around her family and close friends. Margrit lived on her farm until her passing, at home, on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, after sadly struggling with numerous health issues in the last years of her life.

She will be greatly missed by daughter, Bettina (Yvo) Schmucki, grandsons Noah, Clayton, Trey and Leo, her sister Brigitta (Alexander) Buehrer Moser, as well as many friends and neighbours.

Margrit was predeceased by her parents, Otto and Margrit Buehrer. The family asks that you carry on Margrit’s caring and generous spirit by extending a helping hand to someone in need, paying a kind act forward, or donating to a charity of your choice.
