1962 – 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Roger Kenneth Lundgren on September 15, 2023 at the age of 60 years.
Roger was born on December 18, 1962 in Innisfail, Alberta to Ken and Myrna Lundgren. He was raised on the family farm and grew to love the farm lifestyle. During school days, he was part of the accelerated learning program and he completed high school at Spruce View in eleven years, at the age of 17.
Roger was part of the Burnt Lake Gas Co-op board for over 30 years and enjoyed every moment. He held various positions over the years and so loved being part of the process and being with the people who were part of it. After graduation, Roger got a job with Altana (the company changed ownership many times ending with Whitecap Resources) and the rest is history. He worked in the industry as a Field Operator for 42 years and was extremely proud of the opportunity he was given. He loved his work and thoroughly enjoyed going to work every day.
At the age of 12, Roger joined the Penhold Air Cadets and had many great opportunities. He traveled to places like Ottawa and experienced balloons and gliders which developed his love of flying. He continued on to get his small aircraft pilot’s license as well as his commercial pilot’s license. He chose to stay with the smaller aircraft and decided to purchase a Piper PA – 18 Super Cub which of course led to the developing of an airstrip at the farm. Many of his friends from the flying club would fly out and land to have a visit and a coffee. He was excited for adventure and enjoyed trips to Cub conventions and would fly to the U.S. and Northern BC, usually taking along a friend as a co-pilot.
Roger always loved hunting, fishing, and watching the sunrise. He was a strong man who loved people and had a personality that reached many and made an impression. One of his last pieces of advice was “never work so hard you have calluses on your hands and can’t tie a fishing fly.”
Roger was very proud of his family and the farming life. He loved his friends and neighbors and was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support that was shown to him and his family throughout his battle with cancer.
Roger is survived by his loving family, wife, Kim Davies; his five children: Lukas, Nolan (Jess), Zackary, Carson and Cale; his mother, Myrna Lundgren; his siblings: Norm (Donna), Darcy (Greg), Karen (Mike); sister-in-law Karen (Dave), brother-in law Brent; in-laws Brad and Linda Davies, aunt Elaine Thompson, uncle Gary Matthews and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
He is pre-deceased by his father, Ken Lundgren; his aunt Darlene Bryan; cousin Dallas Bryan; uncle Oscar Thompson and his grandparents Earl and Edna Matthews and Rudolph and Mariam Lundgren; and Theresa Whipple, Lukas’ mom.
A Funeral Service was held at the King of King’s Church in Dickson, Alberta on Friday, September 22 at 1:00 pm. A reception will be held afterwards at the Spruce View Hall.
