August 18, 1928 - April 7, 2020
Ellen “Bernice” McNeil changed this mortal life for that of immortality on April 7, 2020 at the age of 91. She was born August 18, 1928 at Dodsland, SK to Fred & Hannah Burwell, the youngest of 4 children. Stan (Joyce), Cora (Dave), and Lloyd (Margaret). Bernice completed elementary school at Camrose and high school at Lacombe. She then trained as a nurse’s aide in Calgary. While working at the Didsbury hospital she met Robert McNeil. They were married in November 1951. She became a part of a large family and embarked on a life of long hours and hard work with a mixed farming operation with her husband. Robert & Bernice raised 5 children on the farm. She enjoyed living on the farm, cooking, growing a large garden, selling eggs, cream, chickens and potatoes.
In 2002 she retired from the farm and moved to a condo in Olds. There she lived independently to the age of 91 until she moved into assisted living at Sunrise, Olds in December 2019. As her mobility decreased, she missed outings, playing the piano, baking and preparing her own meals, but never forgetting her love of family. She touched the hearts of all that knew her and left a lasting impression. She will be remembered for her amazing memory, love of life, love of music, big heart, sense of humor and dedication to family. Her life revolved around her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to whom she was known as “GG”. Nothing was more important to her than her family. She went out of her way to make sure everyone in her family received special treats, favorite foods and chosen interests. Never forgetting birthdays, anniversaries or special occasions.
She is survived by her children, Gary (Theresa), Fred (Veronica), Randy (Judy), Terry (Cara), and Roberta (JJ). Grandchildren, Lisa, Jessica (Dave), Rob (Sarah), Phil (Andrea), Melissa (Adam), Deanne (Cody), Miranda (Chad) and Nanette (and family). Also, 12 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She is predeceased by her husband, Robert in 1987 and daughter in law, Judy in 2007.
