1920 – 2023
Bill Moser passed into the care of his Lord on September 9th, 2023, just 10 days shy of his 103rd birthday.
He is survived by his sons Karl (Margarete) and Harold (Marian), grandchildren Julie (Dave), Jessie (Pat), Heather (Dan), Timothy (Rachel), Steven (Meagan), Victoria (Jordan), and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents and all his 10 brothers and sisters, daughter-in-law Casey (Karl), and in 2019 by his loving wife of 70 years, Inge.
Bill was born in Romania in 1920 and spent his youth on a farm there, where the family raised field crops using horse drawn implements and bred and sold horses. The family relocated to Germany prior to World War II. Bill was pressed into service in the Navy during the war. He survived that experience but was very reluctant to share much about it. After the war he became a bricklayer, and it was during his commute to work on the trains that he became enamored with a young lady named Inge Hoppe.
They were married in September of 1949. They continued working in and around the city of Heilbronn. In 1950 they welcomed their first son, Karl, into the world. In 1953 the family of three made the move to Canada, eventually settling in Calgary, Alberta. Bill acquired employment with the City of Calgary, driving graders, trucks, and other equipment. In their spare time Inge and Bill bought a building lot on Child Avenue in the Bridgeland area and built their home there. A second son, Harold, was added to the family roster in 1954. The next move was to buy a lot and build a house in the town of Forest Lawn, which had recently been annexed to Calgary. By 1960 Bill and Inge had sold the Bridgeland house and moved the family to the new house. Bill continued to work for the city until he caught the farming bug. And so, in 1967 the family relocated again, this time to an undeveloped quarter section 3 miles north of Sundre, Alberta.
That first year the family managed to construct a driveway, a house, a barn, and corrals as well as drill a well, clear, pick roots and plant and harvest oats on 30 acres of land. A herd of seven milk cows was purchased, as well as chickens and pigs and winter feed were stacked. And so the stage was set for farming for the next 22 years, before they sold the land and retired to an acreage. During that time Bill also helped many neighbors with construction projects, including the Sundre hospital. He also worked maintenance at the hospital for many years. Hard work and long hours were never a problem for Bill, and he led by example.
Bill and Inge enjoyed many years of travel during their retirement. This of course included many trips to local lakes to catch rainbow trout. The acreage was eventually sold and a move to a house in town occurred at the turn of the century. Then finally in 2012 they moved to the original Sundre seniors lodge, then later to a facility in Olds for 2 years, and finally returning to the newly constructed seniors’ residence in Sundre. Bill took his last breath at the Sundre Senior Supportive Living facility there. The family would like to thank all the staff at SSSL for the many years of care, love and support that Bill and Inge received while residents there. We very much appreciate all that was done for them with such kindness and consideration.
A memorial service to celebrate Bill's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Sundre on October 26th, 2023. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sundre Hospital Foundation in Bill's honor. Heartland Funeral Services Ltd., Olds entrusted with arrangements.
