Dennis Alexander Schmick was born on March 29, 1948 to Adam and Anna Schmick of Calgary, Alberta.  He and his siblings grew up in Carstairs. After graduating from Hugh Sutherland High School, Dennis studied Electronics and Communications Engineering at SAIT.

Being very musical himself, Dennis enjoyed employment with Southern Music in Calgary and Nelson, BC where he met Linda Cedarholm. They were married in 1971 and together raised two children: son Daniel (Heather), grandchildren Austin and Jorja and daughter Tamara (Kevin) Knowles, grandchildren Simone, Adam, and Ivan. In 1972, Dennis began a career in oil and gas beginning with Shell Canada-Schmick Farm Products Ltd. He eventually ran his own PetroCanada station in partnership with Koch Fuel Products Inc. until his retirement. Dennis was extremely friendly and personable, and always treated his customers well.

Dennis volunteered a great deal of his time to serving his community.  He served as Chief of the Carstairs Fire Department, was a black belt Karate instructor, and served on the board of the Carstairs Chamber of Commerce. He was Vice President of the Half Century Club and looked after all the music and maintenance.  Dennis’ passion for music was appreciated during his ten years of volunteering with the Mountainview Music Festival. He was a devoted member of the Carstairs Legion, and was an avid curler, snow and water skier.

In 2018, Dennis married Rosaland (Lynn) Zatko and became stepfather to her girls: Adria (Zak) Zatko; Melissa (John) Lenz; grandchildren Gillian and Lachlan.  Together they enjoyed camping with friends and family, and volunteering for more community events such as the Carstairs Heritage Festival and Beef and Barley Days. All the while, Dennis loved playing music in two bands: Not Exactly Serious and The Keytones.  He was devoted to his friends and his very large family, loved helping out wherever and whenever he could, and made a huge contribution to his community.  He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Along with his children, step children and grandchildren, Dennis is survived by his sister Gloria (Robert) Laidlaw, nephews Neil and Adam; sister Geraldine Lee (Robert-deceased), nephews Craig and Matthew; dear cousin Bob (Linda) Jochems; and many beloved family members.

Dennis is predeceased by his parents Adam and Anna Schmick, and his first wife Linda Schmick.
