SCHMITT, Earl Bennett

1935 - 2024

Earl was born in Rosetown, Saskatchewan on November 25, 1935.  He attended school in Rosetown and then apprenticed as a plumber.  During this time, he met Dorothy (Dot) Carswell, and they married November 26, 1955 residing soon after in Outlook, Sask where they lived for over 30 years.  They were blessed with 67 years together.  Earl and Dot had three boys, Kim, Kelly and Barry.  Family and friends were very important to them.  They enjoyed family gatherings that later in life included grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Earl started a plumbing and heating business in Outlook where his brother Pat joined him for many years.  As well as the plumbing business Earl followed his entrepreneurial spirit and built and sold many new homes, bought a farm, revived a bakery, along with commercial real estate projects including a men’s clothing store. 

Despite the busy work schedule Earl and Dot made time for holidays, camping and boating with family.  Earl and Dot enjoyed many years of winter holidays in Hawaii.  Earl was a Kinsmen and helped with coaching and community events.   He was an avid hockey and sports fan.  In younger years he was an accomplished hockey player known for his toughness, speed and tenacity.  Hockey stayed in his blood manifesting as an avid and enthusiastic fan of community and NHL hockey.

Earl and Dot moved from Outlook to Edson, AB where Earl worked as a pipefitter and project manager.  Earl was a natural project leader when it came to crews/teams.  He treated all with respect and was willing to teach and help others along the way.  He led with a positive attitude about life in spite of some significant hardships including the loss of son Kelly.  In 2001 Earl retired from the pipefitting business and they moved to Olds where Earl helped Barry in the summers at his export hay company for many years.  Earl, Kim and Barry enjoyed the fall hunting seasons.  Earl really enjoyed his time with Kim’s Ducks Unlimited colleagues as well as Barry’s hay industry friends around many a story telling table.   Earl continued to hunt into his 80’s getting a nice buck on his 80 th birthday. 

Earl passed in the Red Deer Michener care home on August 12, 2024.  He leaves to mourn his brother Pat, son Kim (Gail) and their children, Benjamin and his daughter Ariana, Laura (Carlos) Manzanares and their children Emilio and Nicco: son Barry (Nancy) and their children,  Tyler (Miranda), Taylor (Kassandra), Ryley (Nicole) and son Acker, Ronan (Sonya) and Rayelle (Thomas).

Earl was predeceased by son Kelly and wife Dorothy.  Heartland Funeral Services Ltd., Olds entrusted with arrangements.  Condolences may be made or viewed at www.heartlandfuneralservices.com
