Thomas Richard Scott, age 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 2nd at his home at Beacon Hill in Lombard, Illinois. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 53 years, Shirley Ann Scott. 

Tom was on born on a ranch in Didsbury, Alberta, Canada on November 12, 1929, to parents Ira Elwood Scott and Geraldine Murphy Scott. He was one of four sons. He is survived by his brother Clifford (Marion), sisters-in-law Bea Scott & Helen Scott and a large circle of caring and loving friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by siblings Elwood and George Scott, Alberta, Canada. 

After nineteen years of study and work, Tom earned Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from George Williams College, a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Adult Education from the University of Chicago, and a Doctorate in Education from Northern Illinois University. 

Tom was a strong proponent and supporter of education. His passion was Adult Education and lifelong learning. After becoming Evening Dean at the Central YMCA Community College, he was awarded the “Outstanding New Citizen of the Year” for his work in Adult Education. He joined the Northern Illinois University staff as a professor and later became Associate Dean. After he retired from academia, Tom became a real estate broker. 

Tom and his wife Shirley were generous supporters of education; they established the Tom and Shirley Scott Library on the George Williams College/Aurora University Lake Geneva, Wisconsin Campus. Scholarships by the Scotts have been, and continue to be provided, at Elmhurst College, Northern Illinois University and Aurora University. 

Tom was an active member of the First Church of Lombard and a member of the choir for over 55 years. He was the President Emeritus of the Maple Street Chapel Preservation Society. He enjoyed sharing the rich history of Lombard and the Maple Street Chapel. He was a life-long gardener and traveler. He loved entertaining and playing cards and games with friends. 

A memorial service will be held at First Church of Lombard on Saturday, November 23rd at 11:00 AM in the Main Street Sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Maple Street Chapel Preservation Society, 220 S. Main Street, Lombard, IL.
