1927 – 2022
Mrs. Mary Slomka of Innisfail, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Innisfail Health Care Centre on February 15, 2022 at the age of 95 years. Mary was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England on January 13, 1927. Mary was in nurses training in England when she met Jozef Slomka. Mary handed in her resignation because they had decided to emigrate to Canada after their marriage. They married on August 11, 1951. After five years of marriage and three children all under the age of five, they made the move to Canada in 1957 settling in Calgary. The first year of living in Calgary, Mary joined the Catholic Women’s League (CWL).
In 1962, the family moved to Red Deer where Mary continued being a charter member of the CWL. Mary worked as a Nursing Assistant at the Red Deer General Hospital for two years and then when the Auxiliary Hospital was built, she transferred and worked there for another eight years. During her time in Red Deer, Mary volunteered making numerous quilts for the Red Deer Clothing Bank.
The family moved to Innisfail in 1970. Mary ran the concession at the Innisfail Golf Course for a few years. She kept her membership in the CWL and was also a member of the Associates to the Congregation of Norte Dame (CND). In 2022, Mary received her 50-year pin from the CWL which she proudly wore. She was also a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church choir for 20 years. Mary enjoyed golfing, painting, knitting, crocheting and writing poetry.
Mary is lovingly remembered by her son, Leon (Tommasina) Slomka of Calgary; daughters, Ruth (Steve) Avramovic of Vermilion and Barb (Ron) Bristow of Innisfail; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Mary was predeceased by her husband Jozef in 2009 and her parents Robert and Annie Wright and her twelve brothers and sisters.
A Private Funeral Service will be held at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Innisfail, Alberta on February 23, 2022 with Father Liju Jose officiating. Interment to follow at the Innisfail Cemetery.
