June 26, 1943 – June 28, 2024

Raymond Anthony Smith passed away peacefully on June 28th, 2024, following a brief yet courageous battle with prostate cancer.

Born on June 26th, 1943, Ray was the youngest of four children born to Joe and Claire Smith. Raised in the Peace Country, it was here that he forged lifelong bonds, including with his beloved wife Bernice, whom he met in Peace River.

Ray is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bernice (Friedel) Smith, and his children, Teresa, Anita, and Greg (Chasook) Smith. He was a loving grandfather to Chloe Pearson and Ella Smith. Ray was preceded in death by his father Joe, mother Claire, sisters Mary-Ann and Frances (John Sekulich), and brother Edward.

Ray will be fondly remembered for his adventurous spirit and entrepreneurial drive. Trained as a carpenter, he began his career with the Alberta Government before venturing into real estate. In Peace River, he founded two successful businesses, Tag Real Estate and Carefree Travel. Though known for taking risks, Ray's primary motivation was always providing a secure future for his family, whom he deeply treasured.

A passionate traveller, Ray delighted in exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations. He and Bernice particularly enjoyed winters in Arizona, where he indulged in household projects, followed the Padres during offseason, and embarked on day trips to Sedona and the Grand Canyon. Despite health challenges in recent years, Ray faced them with resilience and grace.

Ray's life will be celebrated with a mass on Friday, July 12th, at 10:30 am at St. Stephen's Parish in Olds, Alberta, officiated by Father Nilo. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
