March 8, 1920 - March 17, 2022
Mona Kathleen Stewart had just begun her 103rd year and was supposed to live forever. Born in Mimico, Ontario, March 8, 1920, Mona passed away on Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2022.
Mona married Allan Greenwood Stewart in 1943, and throughout their marriage they lived in Guelph, Edmonton, Halifax and Olds. Mona was a Teacher and Librarian, and Allan was a Clinical Biochemist. They moved back to Alberta in 1980 to retire in Olds. They were proud members of the Olds community, serving in many capacities including the Kiwanis Club, the United Church, the Legion, Music Festivals, and more. Mona was an avid gardener who enjoyed being outside nurturing her plants and often said that gardening was the secret to her longevity. Her favourite saying was, “Use it or lose it”. She was a collector of stamps, dolls, Royal Doulton, and thimbles. Mona and Allan travelled across Canada and the USA, collecting thimbles as they went. Sadly, Allan passed away in 2005 after celebrating their 61st Anniversary.
Mona and Allan’s children, Kenneth and Kathryn, admired their mother’s strength, tenacity and courage. They were raised with a strong love and devotion. Mona was a force of a woman and always a lady. A smart woman, interested in what was happening in the world and everyone in it. She would listen to the news every night and her favourite show was Jeopardy (and Alex Trebek).
Mona will meet up in heaven with her husband Allan, son Kenneth, mother, father, grandparents, brothers, sister and brother in laws, and the many dear friends they made over the years. Leaving here on earth to remember is their daughter Kathryn (Merritt); grandchildren Brys (Angie), Kymberly (Brendon), Sheryl-Lynn (Nwafor); and great grandchildren Jenaya, Graham, Oluchi, Joy and baby Whosit.
Those we love don’t go away. They walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near. Still loved, still missed and very dear.
At Mona’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Instead, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
