August 19, 1935 -January 22, 2023
Ian Watt, beloved husband of Kathleen (“Kay”) Watt, of Calgary (formerly from Dogpound), Alberta passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday January 22, 2023.
Ian was born on August 19, 1935, at the General Hospital in Calgary, Alberta and grew up on the family Coral Hill Ranch in Dogpound, later known as the VC Ranch. He spent his formative years attending Mount Hope School, and then attended and graduated from Red Deer Composite High School.
Ian will always be remembered as a rancher, however, nothing defined Ian more than being a family man. He met the love of his life Kay at a dance at the Dartique Hall and that was the beginning of 62.5 years of married adventure. Ian and Kay went on to have three children James Martin (Cindy) Watt, Shelley Anne (Harvey predeceased) Fyten, Esther Lou (Paul) Troyan. Ian and Kay were then blessed with 9 grandkids: James David “JD” (Madison) Watt, Samantha (Scott) McCulloch, Tyler (Alandra) Fyten, Austin (Paula) Fyten, Caitlin Fyten, Andrew Fyten, Seth Fyten, Jaylene Troyan, and Danielle Troyan. Ian was also blessed with five, soon to be six great-grand kids Charleigh, Mickeigh, and Scotteigh McCulloch, Sterling Fyten, and James “Waylon” Watt. Ian loved his kids and grandkids and was always there to support them whether it be riding, hockey, dance, school sports, Sunday school or anything else they were involved in.
Ian was a Past President and long-time member of Western Stock Growers, and a proud member of the Society for Range Management.
Ian was a lifetime student and follower of his Lord and was a member for many years of the Advisory Board of the Canadian Baptist Theological Seminary. Ian and Kay spent hours with the many churches they were involved in, starting with Cremona Missionary, Westbrook Missionary, Bow Valley Baptist, Cowboy Church, and numerous home churches that they were founding members of.
Ian loved the land, his cattle, horses and always had a great dog by his side. Ian also loved adventure, whether it was to go for a drive or to fly to Kazakhstan or go see the Great Wall of China.
Ian is also survived by his sister Sheila (resides in Ontario) Elliott, nephews Dean (Heather), Darren (Kelley), Ronald Junior, along with their children and grandchildren, as well as brother-in-law, Kenneth Aarsby.
Ian was predeceased by his parents Jim & Lou Watt, his parents in-law Martin and Esther Aarsby, his son-in-law Harvey Fyten, and his foster son Rick Stone, his brother-in-law Ronald Elliott and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins on both sides of his family Dundas and Watt.
Ian will be remembered as a hardworking, humble, kind, and caring man, with a great sense of humor, and he always enjoyed fellowship with family and friends. We will miss him dearly.
