October 4, 1929 – March 29, 2022
It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Doug Welland, formerly of Weyburn, on March 29, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Clearwater Centre in Rocky Mountain House, AB. Doug was born October 4, 1929 in Weyburn, and was raised on the family farm near the whistle-stop hamlet of Worcester just a few miles to the northeast. He began his career at the Weyburn Review where he met Gladys Neiszner whom he married on August 4, 1955. Doug went on to work at Barber Motors, Dreis Motors, and the Co-op Feed Plant in Weyburn. He and Gladys moved to Brandon, MB, Brantford, ON, Edmonton, AB, and finally Red Deer, AB where they settled after retirement, eventually moving to Olds, AB. Doug lived in Olds until January 2022 when he relocated to the Clearwater Centre in Rocky Mountain House.
Doug (or Doc as he was known to all in Weyburn), coached minor hockey for many years, was active in his community, and was known to enjoy many good times with friends and family. He was a proud and devoted father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Doug will be greatly missed by son Terry Welland and wife Elaine; daughter Barb Welland and husband Roger Kowalyk; grandchildren Kohl, Rheanna (Kyle Lewis), Mitchell (Kristen), Serena (Andrew Stewart), Noah Dimitrie, and Victoria (John MacGillis); 5 great grandchildren; sister Mae Stainbrook; and many nieces and nephews. Doug is predeceased by his wife Gladys (2017); parents John (1984) and Ida Welland (1962), and sister Joan Giroux (2015).
A private celebration of Doug’s life will be held this summer in Weyburn. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Doug can be made to the Good Samaritan Clearwater Centre Foundation.
