A chance to weigh in: Olds, county consider new development plan

Annexation, agricultural growth areas proposed

OLDS — Town council has given first reading to an updated Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP) between the Town of Olds and Mountain View Country.

The public hearing and further consideration of that bylaw will be undertaken on Nov. 25 at 1 p.m. in Mountain View County's municpal office.

That meeting will be held in person or virtually due to COVID-19 pandemic protocols.

Council approved first reading of that bylaw during its Oct. 13 council meeting.

The proposed new IDP updates the previous one, adopted in 2007.

As reported earlier, among other changes, the plan allows for three quarter sections northeast of the current town boundaries to be annexed.

It also sets out plans whereby two agricultural growth areas, which will remain in the county, will be earmarked north and south of Olds.

The idea is to “ensure these lands are available for agriculture-related shipping facilities and supporting industries,” according to a town report.

During discussion on the bylaw, Coun. Heather Ryan asked if the plan includes land for a proposed interchange along Highway 2A.

“The area is encompassed within the short term annexation area,” planner Craig Teal said.  “And if that goes in place – the annexation goes through – then certainly the land needed for that interchange will be fully within the town’s jurisdiction."
