An alleged carjacking on Highway 2 on June 5 has led to charges of robbery and assault for a Red Deer man.Police said a 60-year-old Calgary man had pulled into a rest stop off of the northbound lanes of Highway 2 just north of the Highway 27 overpass at about 5 a.m. when he noticed a man approaching his two-door Honda Accord.The man pulled down a partially rolled-down window on the driver's side of the car, shattering the window, and then pulled the victim from the car and threw him to the ground, police said.The suspect then allegedly drove off in the car.The victim was not hurt.After police were called, Const. Gary Sandhu of the Olds RCMP contacted police in Red Deer to look for the stolen vehicle and the suspect was arrested without incident in Gasoline Alley south of Red Deer just off the highway a short time after the alleged carjacking.Craig Abendroth, 38, was scheduled to appear in court in Calgary on June 9.Police have requested that Abendroth undergo a psychiatric assessment to determine if he is fit to stand trial.
