OLDS — Recent efforts to make Town of Olds bylaws more clearly worded are paying off, protective services director Justin Andrew says.
“The review of the bylaws and revisions that were made to the CSB (Community Standards Bylaw), traffic, animals (bylaws), those are all paying dividends, because it's clear legislation, it's more concise,” Andrew said during town council’s Aug. 26 meeting.
“And as (Olds RCMP) Staff Sgt. (Warren) Wright mentioned, the RCMP are utilizing those bylaws to the benefit of everyone, because it gives a lower level response to certain instances, instead of having to go provincial or criminal,” he added.
Last year, town council OK’d new rules under which playground speed limits are in effect all year long, from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
Andrew said protective services staff do receive some complaints about those rules.
But in general, he said, “we are seeing that the community has responded in a positive fashion. We're seeing decreased speeds in those troubled areas, and we're seeing general compliance.
“So as far as ticketing, tickets being issued in those areas, it's very minimal.”
Andrew said another example where the Town will be enforcing the rules is at the Aquatic Centre parking lot, now that Olds College students are back on campus.
“We're going to spend a lot of time there, because we get college students that will park in the ther a lot, even though they clearly they're not allowed to.
“But when we go there every day and give them tickets and warnings and ultimately tow their vehicle if we have to, then, you know, that's what prevents (that) from happening,” he said.
