Olds council has approved disbursement of $13,150 in profits from the Nu2U thrift store to three organizations in the community.During its Dec. 11 meeting, council ratified a suggestion from a committee to provide the grants to three organizations:

$5,000 to the Olds and District Hospice Society;

$6,150 to Olds High School for the purchase of five computerized baby dolls to help students learn to care for infants. They replace dolls that haven't been updated for 15 years;

Another $2,000 goes to the Youth Empowerment Program.

Community services manager Michelle Honeyman said grants come from profits obtained by Nu2U after all expenses have been paid.

Coun. Mary Jane Harper noted that since the fall of 2011, the Nu2U grant program has distributed $206,520 to programs and services throughout Olds and area.

"Once again it shows that when you shop locally ñ and in this case, our Nu2U store ñ those dollars are returned to other groups within our community. So thank you very much to those people who shop (there)," Harper said.

"I think it should also be noted that they have a fantastic number of volunteers in that program and we really appreciate that as well," Mayor Michael Muzychka said.
