Council pay up for review

Town councillors compensated for work on behalf of the community
olds-news

OLDS — Council has appointed a citizens’ committee to recommend how councillors get paid for their work.

Members of that committee, known as the ad hoc citizens committee on council remuneration, are James Cummings, Phyllis Horpenuk, Leon Muir and Dan Peters.

The committee’s mandate is to make recommendations to council on the honoraria (payments) and benefits members of the new council should get once they’re elected.

Currently, town councillors receive a monthly honorarium for their work on behalf of the town.

Currently, the monthly honoraria for members of council are $2,820.57 to mayor Michael Muzychka and $1,543.79 to each of the other six town councillors.

Out-of-pocket expenses incurred an elected official can also be submitted to the finance department for reimbursement. Receipts must accompany such claims.

Once appointed, the committee has 90 days to review the current policy on council compensation and present its recommendations at a regular council meeting.

Council can accept, reject or modify those recommendations.

Town council is required to create an ad hoc citizens committee on council renumeration in advance of the next municipal election, which will occur in October, 2021.

A motion to appoint this committee passed unanimously during an earlier council meeting.
