OLDS — RCMP are urging people not to drink and drive, because that could be costly – in lots of ways.

In a news release, Olds RCMP Cst. Morley Statchuk says if drivers are found to have consumed alcohol and then driven, they could be hit with licence suspensions, vehicle seizures and even criminal charges.

An incident that occurred on June 12 underlined that issue.

At about 8:10 that morning, Olds RCMP were conducting traffic enforcement west of town when they saw a vehicle travelling at more than 180 kilometres an hour.

The driver was stopped and a mandatory screening test for alcohol was undertaken which resulted in a caution.

“As a result of alcohol present and under Alberta provincial Law, the vehicle was seized and the driver’s licence was suspended,” Statchuk wrote. “A summons was also issued for a mandatory court date to the driver for excessive speed.”

Statchuk says if you suspect that someone is driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances, call 911.  You can also call Olds RCMP at 403-556-3323 or your local police service.
