Correctional Service Canada (CSC) officials are investigating after staff found a package containing illegal drugs and other materials on the perimeter of the Bowden Institution.
Items found inside the package included crystal meth, “shatter” (cannabis concentrate), tobacco, and a cellphone charger. CSC officials estimated the total value of the contents at $165,600.
The discovery was made at the medium security facility on Nov. 17. CSC officials announced the find Nov. 22.
The CSC says it's "heightening measures" to prevent contrabrand items from entering the Bowden Institution as well as its other facilities across the country "in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone."
A telephone tip line has been set up for all federal institutions.
The CSC says callers can provide information on security at all its institutions. Those concerns could include drug use or trafficking that could threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates and staff working in those facilities.
