Everything Olds (EO) is trying an experiment — the first-ever Spring Community Showcase, where parents can sign up their kids for various clubs and organizations that operate in the warmer months.

They can sign up for year-round activities as well.

The Spring Community Showcase takes Feb. 12 at the Big Rack Rentals Cow Palace from 5 to 8 p.m.

"The fall showcase (that occurs every year in the Sportsplex) is great for the registrations and information sharing on the community of things that happen in the fall and winter and year round.

"But we were missing out on a second market in terms of the registration period and awareness of activities that happen in the spring and summer," EO marketing and communications coordinator Patti Simoneau says.

"Basically we're going to test pilot it and see how it's received. And if it looks like it could be equally as well received as the fall showcase we'll consider doing it again next year."

She says for those clubs and organizations that operate year round, the spring showcase "just gives them a second opportunity to get their message out there."

Simoneau says the decision was made to hold the Spring Community Showcase in the Cow Palace because the auxiliary ice surface of the Sportsplex, where the fall showcase is held, still has ice in it.

"That was the primary reason. We needed to find a second venue because, obviously there's still hockey going on and skating and whatnot," she says.

She says it also provides lots of room if the showcase needs to expand.
