The Town of Olds and the Olds Lions Club are looking at joining forces to create a memorial forest as part of an expansion of the Olds Cemetery.

"The current 13-acre Town of Olds Cemetery is reaching capacity and there (are) 20 acres immediately to the south of the existing cemetery dedicated to expansion," director of community services Doug Wagstaff says.

He says a proposed design for that expansion includes planting trees as well as creating a gazebo there.

"The design would incorporate concepts of a memorial park and construction is to begin with development of two acres in 2018," Wagstaff says.

Last November, representatives of the Olds Lions Club approached town officials with an idea to create a memorial forest in Olds to commemorate the club’s 50th anniversary and the 100th anniversary of the Lions international organization.

"The town is working with the Lions Club on a proposal to incorporate this concept into the cemetery plans and have the Lions Club sponsor the planting of 100 trees as a memorial forest, as well as the possibility of sponsoring the cost of the gazebo," Wagstaff says.

"Details are still being worked through to present to town council and the Lions membership."
