OLDS — A big change has occurred in recycling, resulting in lower cost for residents, says Sheena Linderman, the Town of Olds' director of corporate services.
As of April 1, The Alberta Extended Producer Responsibility program shifted the cost of recycling from municipalities to producers of packaging and printed paper.
“While residents in Olds will continue to receive the same recycling collection service, producers will now fund and manage the process," Linderman wrote in an email.
“This could lead to improved recycling efficiency, better education on waste sorting, and potential future updates to the program.”
Linderman noted that the Town of Olds reduced solid waste collection fees from $25 a month to $21a month effective Jan. 1, “reflecting the savings that we will see in the cost of recycling.”
