Several students who participated in extracurricular activities were recognized and honoured during an Olds High School awards ceremony at the school June 12.

Those students participated in programs such as the Interact Club, Yearbook Committee and the Fair Trade Committee.

Not all students who participated won awards. The advisor(s) of these activities say all participants worked admirably, so narrowing it down would be a disservice to the hard work they put in.

However, there were a number of awards given to students who participated in some activities.

Jomel Landong was recognized with an advisor award for his efforts as the editor and photographer for the yearbook.

Olds High School was recognized as Fair Trade School of the year by Fair Trade Canada. Advisor Bev Toews announced that in town council last month.

Two students -- Landong and Martina Zumbuehl -- received advisor awards for their efforts and contributions to the Fair Trade Committee.

Landong has been on the Fair Trade Committee since its inception when he was in Grade 9 four years ago.

Ruthie Cranston and Reina Sidebottom of the gay-straight alliance received advisor awards.

The Drumline club members participated in a drum clinic with Rob Maciak in March and gave away some advisor awards, which went to Riley Christopherson and Aidan McAllister.

Among the clubs and programs that didn’t give out any specific awards were the Environment Club, as well as the Interact Club, which raised about $4,500 net for the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) and Shelter Box during their annual fundraising banquet this spring.

Pins were also awarded to students from grades 10 to 12 who arrived later but still consistently participated in any extracurricular activities.
