OLDS — There’ll be a least a couple of new winners of the Olds Curling Club’s seniors’ bonspiel this year.
That’s because at least two curlers who won their sides last year aren’t competing this year, says coordinator Darlene Leasak.
During an interview with the Albertan, Leasak said Larry Flessatti and Doug Manning, who won the A and B sides respectively, are not entered this time.
However, Gene Leonard, who skipped the C-side winner is expected to play.
This year’s edition of the seniors bonspiel runs from Jan. 16-19 at the Olds Curling Club in the Sportsplex.
Sixteen teams are entered this year, the same number as last year.
Leasak says teams are entered not only from Olds, but also from many nearby communities, like Sundre, Cremona and Torrington.
“It's a lot of the same players,” she said. “There's a few new ones, but there's a lot of the same ones from last year.”
Leasak said the potential for new winners makes the ‘spiel exciting.
She said so far, the ice has been been good, but challenging.
"It has swings like it always does,” she said.
The first draw takes place at 10 a.m. Tuesday and the final draw will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday.
