It’s expected that when the next school year begins, Olds High School will be officially known as École Olds High School. The idea is to highlight its French immersion program and to match the elementary and middle schools in town which also have French immersion programs.

Olds High School will be undergoing a name change to reflect its French immersion program and to match the elementary and middle schools.

It's expected that when the next school year begins it will be officially known as École Olds High School.

“Whenever you have a French immersion program we try to honour that, like Deer Meadow and the elementary school.

“They’ve had the école in front of their name for several years, so we kind of waited until the first generation of French immersion students graduated, which happened the last two years.

“We kind of wanted that generation to go through before recognizing the French immersion name in it,” said OHS principal Tom Christensen.

“It takes a bit of a process to change it with the province and everything, but I would expect next school year that our signs and stuff would reflect the école high school,” Christensen said.

The name change is seen as a way to inform people unfamiliar with the school that it shares in this culture of French immersion.

“I think it just says to somebody who maybe is coming to our school or looking at coming to our community that we have a French immersion school,” Christensen said. “I think really nothing more than that — other than to show that French immersion is a part of our culture and our school.”
