OLDS — An RCMP youth academy has been set up this summer to give students an idea of what life could be like for them if they joined the police service.
The camp, for Grade 10-12 students in the Olds RCMP service area, is already filled for this year.
It will operate July 22-26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at no charge.
Constables Mitch Price and Pablo Gargallo will lead the camp, with help from guest presenters.
“There have been many different academies held around the province and we felt we had a great group of young people in the town of Olds to offer this exposure to,” Price wrote in an email.
“Applicants will be given the opportunity to experience hands-on learning in many different aspects in the world of policing, such as drill, police defensive tactics and fitness.
“Each day, there will be presentations and demonstrations from some of the most sought-after specializations in the RCMP, like air services, police dog services, emergency response team, explosive disposal unit, forensic identification services.”
A recruiting team will explain how that aspect of the service goes and answer any questions from participants.
“It will be a great opportunity for our applicants to ask questions and have conversations with active police officers to see if policing is a career path they would like to explore,” Price wrote.
“We are excited and optimistic that this will serve as a great week for the youth taking part and we look forward to hosting this as an annual event.”
