Town of Olds officials are aware that consumption of medical or recreational marijuana could become an issue for landlords and their tenants.
However, Larry Wright, the town's strategy and technology officer, says it's too early to know how that will be handled because town officials are waiting for guidance from the provincial government.
"Right now we're sort of in a holding pattern, waiting for the provincial and federal legislation to come down and let us know what they're going to enact," Wright said during a Feb. 16 breakfast meeting organized by the Olds & District Chamber of Commerce and Uptowne Olds.
"We have had these discussions to begin with and we'll have to consult our legal departments of course," he said.
"As it is, it's legal for landlords to dictate that nobody smokes tobacco in their homes. We're hoping that they'll have that option with regards to the rental properties as well. And then make that step to add that to their rental agreements with their tenants," Wright added.
"So we'll be definitely looking into what's legal and what's not. Everything's in flux with the cannabis and the legalization of it because we don't have legislation."
