OLDS — If elementary school students in Olds weren’t wet behind the ears before, they sure were June 27 when firefighters sprayed them with water from a fire truck.
Students at École Olds Elementary School and Holy Trinity Catholic School got the treatment.
Ironically, the soaking was postponed earlier when it was rained out.
Olds Fire Department Chief Justin Andrew says the dousing was undertaken last year as well.
“If you can recall, the last week of school was in the midst of a prolonged heatwave and COVID restrictions were lifting enough that this type of an outdoor activity was permitted,” he wrote in an email.
“The kids thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and we were happy to provide it to them then, and again this year. We have heard it was the highlight of some of the kids’ year, which is pretty cool to hear.”
Andrew said Olds firefighters love to do these kinds of things.
He noted other such events have included a parachute egg drop, slip and slide baseball at the Community Learning Campus, and visits to the fire hall during Fire Prevention Week.
