Every Tuesday after school, Olds Municipal Library is a hub of excitement as tweens stream into the library.
Tween Tuesday is a low-cost after-school program which gives youth ages nine and older an opportunity to socialize, craft, play and experiment in a safe environment. Past programs have included everything from slime making and playing board games to coding on iPads.
Participants can sign up from week to week for only $5 a session. The flexibility of booking a week at a time allows parents and kids alike to choose which classes work best for their busy lives.
On Oct. 25, Tween Tuesday will play host to a visiting Alberta artist. The special free event will feature an opportunity to work with Emily Promise Allison. Emily is a performance artist who draws inspiration from imaginative youth. Her work features dream-like still life images.
Emily's exhibition, Make-Believe, is part of a travelling exhibition (TREX) and is on its way to another location after a month at the library.
As the exhibition moves from venue to venue, several photographs will be replaced to highlight the creative diversity of new participants.
Olds youth are invited to add to the evolving art collection by interacting with a set of props to create living pictures (tableau vivant). The resulting scenes will be lit and photographed by the artist to document the experience.
The art program is supported by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, with a mandate to provide access to art to all Albertans.
Interested tweens can register for any of the Tween Tuesday events with the library at 403-556-6460 or online at oml.prl.ab.ca/events.
