Olds RCMP did not encounter much fallout from the first day of cannabis legalization on Oct. 17, according to Staff Sgt. Jim MacDonald.

"(There were) no issues per se," he says.

"One traffic stop was initiated (Oct. 17) with four high school students who were found to be in possession of a small amount of cannabis. Based on the circumstances, charges were not laid but the matter was further dealt with by the school."

In Alberta, it's against the law for youth under 18 to consume cannabis.

Olds High School principal Tom Christensen says due to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP), details of that precise incident cannot be released.

However, he said, "typically the suspension in the school and district would be a significant suspension."
