Six firefighters from Olds -- part of a 12-member contingent from Mountain View County -- are already back in town after leaving Tuesday to battle the Kenow wildfire in the Waterton Lake area.

Firefighters from Carstairs, Didsbury and Olds left early Tuesday, Sept. 12 to fight the fire, according to a Town of Olds news release. The Olds group, complete with an aerial ladder truck -- left at 2 a.m. that day.

However, Captain Scott Chant says they came back Wednesday as a result of the rainy weather. "With the cooler weather, the risk has been lowered," Chant told the Albertan. "Now that the forestry (firefighters) are able to continue in the back country, (there's) not the need for a large contingent of structural firefighters."

Although firefighters have been diverted from their own communities to help in this battle, firefighting needs won't be hurt at home, officials stress.

"County-wide coverage has been assessed and deemed to be adequate for this deployment. Area residents are to be ensured that sufficient coverage is in place throughout the Mountain View County region," the release says.
